Musings on a world I am no longer sure about
argh!
I’ve been bitten by really annoying bitey things! I wouldn’t mind, but I’m slightly allergic to them, so I end up with huge lumps everywhere. Plus I couldn’t sleep. Gah! Watched Akira again last night. Had forgotten quite how lovely it is and quite how much film since has been influenced by it, from Revenge of the Sith through to the Matrix. And the motorbike. I wants the motorbike. Apple have released Safari on Windows. Except on Vista64 when I installed it I got no fonts whatsoever. Nothing. Nada. Giggle. Still not very impressed. It may have the fastest rendering time of any other browser, but that’s not what’s important, hasn’t been for a good long while. It’s the speed of the thing when handling DHTML that’s the issue. And its standards compliance. And Safari really isn’t terribly standards compliant, regardless of what Apple claim. Will play here but I’m suspecting a) my google gadget won’t work, b) freakcity won’t quite work and c) gmail won’t work. Well, I just installed it. And again, I have no fonts. Curious. Having played a bit, I’ve discovered that if you look in C:\Program Files\Safari\Safari.resources there’s a couple of fonts. Copy these to c:\windows\fonts on your pc and magically it all works. For some value of work, that is. Safari appears not to support Windows fonts or cleartype, so the fonts are fuzzy (Cleartype is waaaay better than the crappy font renderer that the PDF engine in OSX uses). So I loaded up Freakcity with the “Blank” theme and got a really fucked up font. And loaded up freakcity with the default theme and got NO font at all. This feels more like an alpha to me than a beta. Seriously. Horrible.
