Knackered.

Sunday December 28th, 2003 at 11:02am

Out Friday night, which was interesting. Took Gaz to the pub. Well, Gaz’s suggestion was the Black Horse (www.theblackhorsebar.com) - dire doesn’t come close. OK, so it was a quiet night, but... DJ who has a face for radio, the wit of a 7yr old dragqueen, and the style of an unstylish thing. Making crap jokes all night. REALLY crap jokes. And he kept laughing at his own jokes, like they were the best thing ever... Scary people (tho a cute ginger lad took his top off whilst I watched and dribbled ; )) So we left after a couple of drinks and went to the Other Place. This was also somewhat empty, and half the bar was closed, which was kinda odd. Gave it a school disco kinda atmosphere with lots of people sat around the edges of the stage and stuff looking bored. Went to Chariots I, as I’ve not been b4...it’s like a feckin maze, think I might have to go again when soberer ; ) Got in at 8:30am, slept a bit, got up and then pootled about online chatting to nice people before being convinced that I should go out to XXL Went to XXL, met Drew there, his ex has apparently vanished from his flat with all his possessions and left all the windows open so someone broke in too... Met Jay too, who I’ve been chatting to online for years, so that was cool : ) Wandered about the dodgy bit...it was interesting, lots of people standing around watching - almost felt like handing out scorecards so we could mark them out of 10 ; ) Came back early as I was knackered - tho apparently Adam went too and I missed him : ( Think I need more sleep :S

interview and stuff like that

Tuesday December 23rd, 2003 at 21:15pm

Well, I had the second interview, tho I’m not sure how I did. HR people often scare me as I don’t ever know what to say to them. If I’m talking to a techy they can get an idea of what I want to do and what I can do and my value, but a non technical person might not know what I mean and so...oh, I dunno...I guess I did OK. Got a coughing attack in the middle of it too : S Still really really hope I get this job or I’m buggered : ( Well, not buggered, as I’ll have money coming in for a couple of months, but I hate jobhunting and stuff...

It’s lovely to be back in Crawley, no really. Bugger all to do, but nice coffee anyways. Second interview tomorrow - thinking I really really hope I don’t fuck this up : S Need the job. Want the job. It’s all lovely there and fluffy and nice people and stuff.

urgh. Do I have to go to work tomorrow?

Sunday December 21st, 2003 at 18:10pm

Lenny enjoys Pizza :D (clicky)
Lenny enjoys Pizza : D
Met Niki off the train at about twenty past one I think...traipsed over to Wapping to find the Bass shop all shut. Not to be disheartened, we found a Pizza Express to have lunch in, in case it was shut for lunch or something. Texted James to see if he could see opening times on their website then settled down in Pizza Express for some American Hot goodness. Nikki was determined that Lenny should try some, tho he wasn’t having any of it ; ) James texted back to say that the Bass shop had moved! No signs outside or anything. So we got the bus to Aldgate then attempted to find it. An hour later, having wandered round most of Spitalfields and Brick Lane, we gave up and called a (remarkably cute) cabbie, who took us to where we’d started from minus a road. Typical. Had a play with a couple of nice basses, including a rather gorgeous, but rattly five string Washburn. Headed into the West End to do a bit of shopping - gave up after a bit and ended up in Retro with Nikki showing off her newly bought magic set from Hamleys. Stunning. They had to head off for the train at about 8ish so I headed home for a bit then fucked off to the Swan for a few hours. Think I drank far too much ; ) Woke up and bimbled about the flat not doing much at all. Wrote a bit of code. Went back to bed. James came over with Red Dwarf so watched far too much of that. Went to bed early. Did bugger all today too. Ah well

Interview and fun

Friday December 19th, 2003 at 12:20am

Interview seemed to go well, fingers crossed...They’d been round my website and seemed interested in me as a person too, mentioned that my friends seemed interesting and Rachel said she’d like to meet Nikki, which was a little surreal as I’m meeting Nikki in a bit to do Xmas shopping and stuff... 2hr interview, 1hr was a technical test, which I apparently did faster than everyone else (yay me!) the rest was a general chat about my skills and stuff...I seemed to match up pretty well with their expectations which is good, and I’m quietly confident that I’m in with a good chance... On my way to meet Nikki now for much shopping fun.

Lakeside

Thursday December 18th, 2003 at 20:28pm

What’s the point of the platform indicator at Chafford Hundred? There’s only one platform! Just spent £200 on new suit, shirt and shoes. Bit more than I meant to, but I have to look my best tomorrow. Well, that’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it ; ) Been told that I might not be needed in the office tomorrow...so might get to surprise Nikki and Lenny, who are down for the day and think they’ll only be seeing me for a bit after work. Might see if they want to visit the bass shop in Wapping, coz I reckon Lenny’d love that. Keeping my fingers, legs and eyes crossed about the job interview tomorrow...Hope I get it. Lots of cute things wandering about in Lakeside, but I’m in the wrong mood for it all at the moment. I need a holiday but can’t afford one at the moment. That’s one thing I really won’t miss about contracting...

Lunchness

Thursday December 18th, 2003 at 12:21am

Bought a steam cuisine M&S thingy for lunch, which I’m about to go cook...I discovered an “email my password” link in helm, so Harry sent me the new password for the circus2iraq site. It’s now all back and lovely and I don’t think there’s anything missing as far as I am aware. Need urgently to work out how to script lftp and bash/sh enough to have it log in and grab the databases for both it and freakcity every night, to obtain some kind of incremental backup. I suspect I may need a little help with that one ; ) Not much to do in work, for a change, looking forward to the interview tomorrow though. Should be fun ; ) Might go shop tonight and buy a suit as mine’s a bit threadbare... : (

I have an interview!

Thursday December 18th, 2003 at 8:46am

Worked from home yesterday, but there wasn’t that much to do, so chilled out a bit too. Got a phonecall from the agency saying I have an interview at 9am on Friday. Got a hurried and panicky email from fisheye as the www.circus2iraq.org site is down. It was on the same server as freakcity was, so emailed tech support to try and obtain the new password for it. Rewrote the journals a bit, the profiles and edited bits. The public and members only bits are now (as they should always have been) running from the same code. Headed off to the Barbican for Return of the King. It is incredible. Sooo damn good, even if the ending was all wrong. Go see! Nice to see Andy Serkis appearing in his actual face at the start too, even if he *does* look scarily like Mark Thomas ; ) Got home, had been sent an incorrect password for circus2iraq so went to bed. Still not got the right password, am hoping it’ll arrive by the time I get to the office

District line.

Tuesday December 16th, 2003 at 18:23pm

Working from home tomorrow. Should get a chance to fix my puncture I hope. Also, should get a chance to work out why on earth my Exchange 2000 server appears dead. Wish someone would hurry up and phone me and tell me when that damn interview is. Ugh. Busker playing guitar shittily in the tube carriage. “Everything’s gonna be alright”. It so isn’t. Dan gave me a lift back to London as he lives near Wimbledon - we figured it’d be safer than trying to work out where the fuck Cobham station is by road, as neither of us knew. He suggested the mud path then mentioned that he might need a Sherman Tank to do it...so I ended up at Hammersmith - fortunately I’ve been there before, taking the tranny to the hospital, so I knew my way to the station. Abandoned the choob as he was a bit annoying. Jumped on a number 8 instead. Now stuck in traffic but in a good way. Someone has projected hearts all over the big arch thing in Grosvenor square. Very odd. Thinking about going for a drink tonight but not sure as there’s crap all to do on a Tuesday. All the pretty christmas lights get me down : (

Posh lunch0r

Tuesday December 16th, 2003 at 14:31pm

Lunch in St James’ Park Tennis Club (think that was its name), Weybridge... Big burger and chips. Nice, if a little borgeouise... Was an odd mood over food, our team is made up of both CP and Critical people, so half of us are jobless and half of us aren’t. Talked about Christmas as if nothing was wrong. They were all talking about their families and what they were going to be doing and it struck me how much I’m missing being with someone I can do that kind of thing with. Back to the office. Why do Mercedes Benz have varnished and stained hardwood everywhere? It’s so tacky. Then again, so are cream leather seats. Lovely and comfortable though ; ) Got bugger all to do now, cept wait on BAs

On the train...

Tuesday December 16th, 2003 at 9:19am

09:19 - On a train. Not sure if I should phone the office and see if there’s anyone around who wants to pick me up from the station, or if I should just walk. No one should have to see Wimbledon this early in the morning. Not sure if I should negotiate with CP to get out of my month’s notice or not. I don’t want to be sat in the office doing bugger all, even if they *are* paying me for it. It’s a shame they’ve taken this route, they’ve destroyed a company and wasted a fortune only to give the design to people incapable of completing it...ah well, not my problem any more... So I have a week left in Cobham, various bits and bobs to , even though my heart isn’t really in it. Hoping I can work from home tomorrow as it’s Lord of the Rings in the evening, which should be good : ) Spent some time redoing my site in DHTML last night...kinda works ok, but I want to make the text writer function into an object and I’m not 100% sure how to. For now, there’s a “coming soon” bit - will work on it some more later.

Beautiful morning
- 16th Dec 2003 005 (Small).jpg A business that makes nothing but money is no kind of business at all - Henry Ford. Or so says Barclays’ new poster campaign. Hm. What do Barclays make then? Got ANOTHER flat tyre. Had to walk the bike back from Aldgate. Grr. So it’s now 08:55 and I should be in Cobham. But I’m not, I’m on the Waterloo Line. Pah. No news yet about the interview. Hopefully will hear soon. God, I’d forgotten the fun you have, writing Graffiti on the tube...

The morning sun plus scratched windows ; )
My company website is missing some graphics : ( Spose I’ll have to do them all again then! *sulk* Anyways...we’re back on the new server and it all seems to work ok - hopefully! this will be my first attempt at a pic upload, so we’ll see if the perms are set right. Back in Cobham again for at least this week. Lots to do, but fewer deadlines, which is always a good thing. Lots of people swearing in the office today, so I guess something might have not gone right ; ) Ah well...back to work ; )

sunny : )

Sunday December 14th, 2003 at 13:34pm

When Boyfriends Attack (clicky)
When Boyfriends Attack
It’s all sunny and pretty and stuff outside. It’s even warm(ish) Scary! It occurred to me just now that it’s almost christmas. I might have to dig out the decorations and string ’em up too...might even make an Xmas freakcity theme or something, not sure yet. I think I’m going to go christmas shopping in a bit - I have a good four hours left or so and I don’t know when I’ll next be free, as the family will want to monopolise next weekend at a guess. Jamesog came over on Thursday, have been chilling out and watching telly a bit, plus far too much coding...feel a bit bad for having bored him, but that was my weekend plan anyways. He spent a while nesting in the living room, which I’m sure now looks like a subset of his bedroom ; ) Still in Cobham next week, fixes and polishings for the mockups that have been done. Seem to have misplaced my rear bike light, which is worrying, but have no idea where it is. Maybe I should vacuum, it’s probably under all the mud in the hall. Got a puncture on Weds on the way home, see...and it was pissing it down. So a very muddy bike wheel came home with me on the tube, the rest of the bike being chained to Waterloo station. It was one of those moments where you think “what’s that stick doing stuck to my tyre” and then think “shit, I bet that’s holding the air in” just as you pull it off and hear a lovely hissing noise ; ) Walked around half of East London trying to find a damn puncture repair kit, but no! couldn’t be found at all. For some obscure reason I thought that Halfords was open until 9, but it wasn’t. Wandered about in the dark a bit and settled for Sainsburys Garage, which had cheap ones. Very cheap ones. And I’m not talking money... After the THIRD attempt to patch the hole, I gave up. And I gave up giving up smoking too. Gaz texted me to say hello, I popped out to meet him. He has silly hair at the moment ; ) Was in a bad mood so took him for a drink at the Hearse before heading back to the flat. The Hearse seems to have gained popularity again, busy busy last Friday and pretty busy on an early Weds evening too... Showed Gaz my firefly DVDs. Yay Went to Swan for the Amateur strip night. Met dtt there, and a few others I know - entertainment! Sandra’s first stripper was barely capable of speech, being as drugfucked as a very drugfucked thing, he ended up threatening Sandra with some mumbles and then being kicked out. Second guy was an exhibitionist, and really shouldn’t have bothered. Back turned and chatting to vervain, she announces the next stripper as “Adam”. It was Adam the space_chicken! Not seen him in aaaaaages, and now I’ve seen him naked. Tsk. My life is strange ; ) He won, too, £100. Then he spent lots of it on getting us drunk. Which was very kind of him! Him and Sal and a few others wandered off to Chariots with the promise they’d get me up in the morning before going home... Went home, shattered, went to bed. Fortunately, working from home on Thurs meant that I didn’t have to worry bout my bike right away. Was woken by text from Sal @ 8am, they turned up afterwards with enough breakfast to feed a horse or two. 4 litres of OJ, 24 rashers of bacon, 8 sausages, 10 eggs, 1 can of baked beans (still in my kitchen because I refuse to cook ’em ; ))... Was cool. We ate, and Sal went to bed (bless) and Adam and I watched DonnieDarko - had forgotten that the song (Mad World) that Gaz had played to me last Friday was in it. Had forgotten how gorgeous it all was. Must get owen to see it soon! He wandered off to meet friends, I did lots of work, went to Halfords and bought Slime and a new inner tube. Patched bike together and James arrived and we watched telly a bit then went to bed. Was late in the morning, almost missed my train (had to commute with a bike whee

Journaltastic

Saturday December 13th, 2003 at 22:23pm

Well. As I have no proper server at the moment and the site is quiet as fuck, I thought I’d do a bit of development. I’ve just learned loads of SQL that I should really have bothered to find out about beforehand that would have been useful when coding blogs and stuff. Still, I know it now, so if I get desperate I’ll just recode it some time : ) There’s now a cute ickle blog calendar thing - this will be reused to make the noticeboard - am happy with it being all transparent and groovy and happy with it working damn well too. Good day’s work. In other news, I can’t get hold of the bloke what runs the server as his email address keeps bouncing. So...I might either change the site to point here for a bit, or I might move it elsewhere. Not sure yet. Spent some time making the whole thing work in GMT as opposed to whatever timezone the thing was hosted on. This makes the site very portable - I can move it in about 10 minutes or so - but does mean I’ll have to think of some kind of BST aware code at some point to make it all work right...tho I can’t imagine that’d be too difficult. It does have the added advantage of meaning that I can put in time zones, so people can log in world wide and stuff : ) Coo. I just got paid! A week early! Right. Think it’s time to go get pissed : D

Drank too much @ the weekend. Woke up at 7pm Saturday (which was...ahem...interesting ; )) pootled about writing bits of Freakcity, then went back to bed. Got woken up by my alarm at 6:30am Sunday. Ooops. Went back to sleep, got up again. Felt shitty still, so farted about with the computer more. Think I watched some telly. Don’t really remember, it was all a bit of a blur really. Did a whole load of work from home today, gradually feeling crappier as the day went on...I really must get around to getting to a supermarket and buying drugs an stuff. So am working from home again today too, when I eventually get to bed. Have the freakcity dictionary, dick up and running now which I think is quite groovy, even though I’ve already had it compared to #aber’s one. Bah. My Firefly DVDs arrived today \ö/ so watched the commentary for Serenity and Objects in Space. Serenity was Nathan Fillion and Joss, who just spent ages going on about him splitting his “pants” over and over. It was quite funny ; ) Anyways. Should probably go to bed, try an sleep some and then get up nice an early to finish off all the work I have.
