Musings on a world I am no longer sure about

Addicted

OK, so I have a problem. I am an addict.

I used to be a proper photographer, but then Instagram arrived. Now I point, oversaturate, add frame and submit like every other person on the planet. Cmon, it’s not even real photography. Grawrgh.

I have a perfectly decent SLR. I have a perfectly decent compact camera for that matter, as well. So why do I keep Instagramming my little heart out? It. Must. Stop!

So I went out this morning to take some pictures. Some of them came out quite well, am happy again = )

Whilst in Berlin, my bike was stolen from the parking garage under my flat. Again. 4th bike in as many years. They cut through the barrier it was locked to as they couldn’t cut through the lock. (Abus locks ROCK btw).

Was slightly miffed again. Not much to be done about it now though. No point going to the police, I was away for 6 weeks. Don’t even know when it happened. So meh. I simply take my lumps and get a new bike.

However, I’m mostly in Berlin these days and I am annoyed with losing bikes, so I decided that I should get a Brompton, that way I can travel with it and I can also keep it with me. I still got me a new Abus lock, which pretty much doubles the weight of the thing tho.

Flew back to Berlin with it in the hold. Along with some other stuff. It was bounced around quite a lot I think, the shower gel I packed with it burst and showered everything in green, which was interesting. Made the office smell nice though until I got it home : )

Very glad I bought it. Have missed cycling lots.

Cycle + Camera = awesome, generally. So expect more pics from me soon...

Went out yesterday morning and took a whole bunch. I call it “Empty”.

mobile romness

So yeah, back on the custom roms again. Heh. Some habits are hard to kick ; ) So far, my favourite has to be the alpha of CM9 for my Galaxy Nexus. The hardware acceleration all works flawlessly, it’s smooth and beautiful, the extras are nice touches (long press back to kill an app, customisable silent times, tweak able brightness controls and the likes. The new launcher, trebuchet, just works. Tried Miui, but for now, is laggy and not nearly as smooth. Will likely switch back later when it works a bit better...

Is the news written by journalists?

Wednesday April 18th, 2012 at 5:32am

Grrggh.

www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2012/apr/17/ken-livingstone-boris-johnson?CMP=twt_gu

A pretty misleading article in the Grauniad’s “Comment is Free” section.

Kinda annoyed me. It should state ON THE ARTICLE that the author “Andrew Boff” isn’t a journalist, he’s a conservative spokesman.

“Why Ken isn’t very good, by Andrew Boff” is read differently to me than "Why Ken isn’t very good, by Andrew Boff, London Assembly Conservative spokesman for planning, housing and the Olympics"

Amusingly, on the Comment Is Free section’s header there’s a quote from a Grauniad editor. “Facts are sacred”. Even if this is an opinion piece, it could do with some of them.

And people wonder why I don’t read newspapers...

Still, the comments are awesome and point out many of the errors and omissions in the author’s rant.

Rollercoaster

Monday April 16th, 2012 at 7:29am

So yeah, I should probably get into the habit of blogging more often...

I’ve been busy, am back in Berlin for any of you who didn’t realise. Working hard, thinking about what else I can do with myself whilst I’m out here.

Geeking:

For the time being, I’m writing a Javascript framework called FractalJS - you can catch up on progress here: github.com/scottbert/FractalJS

I’m also (when time allows) tweeting from @scottvl about geeky things, mostly Javascript related.

I’m also designing/developing an awesome mobile app : )

...and on top of that all I’m continuing my dayjob. Hah!

Photography:

I’ve created a Tumblr for pointless instagram pictures: scottjoyce.tumblr.com/

I’m in the progress of rewriting www.scottjoyce.net - until then, the old site still works and you can still order prints and canvasses if you like my work.

I’m on Google+ here: plus.google.com/111030932976165400527/posts

I’m on Facebook here: www.facebook.com/scottjoycephotography

I’m looking for suggestions of what to photograph and/or commissions.

Personal life:

Am in Berlin until at least June - if anyone fancies coming to visit, let me know? I’ll be creating a couple of FC events soon for CSD (Berlin Pride) and Stadtfest (the weekend before). Would be nice to get a few people out to say hello : )

Less than a month until the second anniversary of my CP. Awwws...

Bacon is still awesome.

I went teetotal after being mugged when drunk in Berlin a few months ago. Got to thinking, a disproportionate amount of the bad things that have ever happened to me in my life have been alcohol fuelled/related, so why not give it a go?

Segways are almost as awesome as bacon.

Yet another bike nicked in London from a locked underground parking garage. I blame Boris.

Anyways, gotta run to work — love you all xXx
