Stolen London

Monday May 2nd, 2011 at 10:55am

I’m going to create a new photography project and I’d quite like all you budding photographers to help out.

It’s called “Stolen London”.

Have you ever wondered why common land is disappearing and who gives elected councils the right to sell that common land? Same for council estates (Harca springs to mind) and old council buildings. These things are owned by the people and our elected representatives see fit to sell these things, often partly for their own gain.

The whole of Canary Wharf is privately owned for example. Spitalfields Market is owned and run privately and you’ll get thrown out if you go near it with an SLR.

Huge chunks of London are now private, have restrictions on access, many have restrictions on photography and I find it quite upsetting that all of this goes on and no-one seems to care about it much.

So...stolen London - beauty through bars, access rights signs, people behind gates, make it imaginative, make it fun.

We used to own our city, it has been stolen from us by the very people we elected to safeguard it. If you care, give it your love. Record those thefts and add them to the following flickr group:

www.flickr.com/groups/stolenlondon/

I will publish the best of them on the stolenlondon.com website (coming soon)
