Musings on a world I am no longer sure about
Arrived at the new office...
Arrived yesterday at the new office in Berlin to discover that it’s in a lil bit of geek history — I’m now working in the building formerly known as Blinkenlights

OK, so I’m a sad geek, but still...

This morning I woke up
In a strange city. One might feel this is somewhat unexpected or somewhat expected depending on your point of view, but still. Sometimes things just hit you a bit. It took me 10 years to get over the fact I was living in London. I’d often just stop on a street corner and marvel at the sight of so many big buildings. I miss that sense of wonder, I really do.
Moved to Charlottenburg at the weekend — a much nicer flat, 4th floor with a balcony instead of ground floor with bars on the windows. Heating that works instead of a boiler that goes out every couple of days leaving you to wake up or get home frozen. The internets. A dishwasher/washing machine combination that doesn’t fry the fuses. Lightbulbs in the living room. That kinda thing.
There be some pics on flickr (or facebook) if you wish to have a peer.
Been feeling a bit ropey the last couple of days. I have a bad taste in the back of my throat that won’t go away, having had a peer it could be a throat infection so I’m gonna take it easy for the next couple of days and see if it goes away.
Stressed at the moment too, so not sleeping too well. I’ve had a week of classic anxiety dreams, everything from watching my gran fall down the stairs to being made homeless to dying. My brain doesn’t like being out of control much and reminds me to sort myself out
So mamy plans depend on so many variables. It’s challenging. I’m not exactly being as proactive as I could be and the people close to me are getting it in the neck a little at the moment as my brain, frustrated with the lack of changes it can force upon me, tries to force them upon everyone else. And whilst I deride other people for being reactionary and not realising it I’m actually doing the same, which is somewhat poor of me. Still, we live to learn.
Back in London this weekend, which will be good as it’s payday and I’m missing L more than I should be really. Which he’ll probably find sweet as he gets crushed to death with hugs, but isn’t exactly useful for either of us
Tempted by the idea of Discomon on Saturday night. Is anyone else going? Ms Krotkrot sent me an invite and I’ve never been, but I went to his last effort and it was marvellous fun, complete with a musical cabaret version of The Silence of the Lambs — small clips of which can be found here and here
Flying back here on Sunday, but this time from Heathrow as, irritatingly, they’ve stopped the flights from City Airport. Can’t be helped really. Three weeks in a row this time, first weekend I’m having L out, treatments allowing and stuff. Second weekend, Mum and Andy are coming to visit. So I’d better make sure I keep the flat spotless for them...
Things I’m amused by, number 1.
Viscount Rothermere. He’s the man that owns the hate spewing shitsheet that is the Daily Mail. Amusingly, it’s been discovered that he’s a non dom, living in France, apparently, to avoid paying tax here. Someone should tell the Daily Mail, they’d be outraged!
...oh.
And I’ve not even started on the fact that the group is owned through tax havens such as Bermuda
There’s a demo on Tuesday about it and you can read more in Private Eye or on their website - though I’d suggest buying it, the cooking tips alone are worth the 17 groats. (I must remember to do this)
Dollhouse continues to grow on me. It was quite silly in the first couple of episodes. I know Joss’s work and know how he sometimes takes a bit of time to find his footing so have been watching it mostly out of loyalty, but the last episode, the Joss penned “Man on the Street” was Joss on top form and most definitely kicked the show into shape a little. What with the end of the awfully tedious but terribly popular BSG, Her

Guten Tag
Back in London for the weekend, had some beers with Liam and TJ on Friday night and watched sillyness on the tellybox (The Guild season 1). Was nice to have a chillout and chat at home.
Solid episode of Dollhouse, but not anything hugely engaging or ground breaking, which is a bit irritating. Reminded me of the Heart of Gold episode of Firefly. Nice, a couple of good character moments but nothing very special.
It’s hard to root for Echo when she’s a different character each week — easier to root for Boyd. Slowly though we’re seeing traces of Echo’s personality. I have a suspicion that we’re in for Angel but in reverse - she’ll break out of the Dollhouse (think W&H) and then go on the run with Alpha as her true love and the other actives chasing her. Then people will root for her and her personality until she’s wiped again and the status quo continues.
Nice Topher line though: “If she got any more relaxed she’d be ooze”.
We shall see. Joss penned episode “The Man on the Street” is next week, let’s hope that that ups the ratings a little. Apparently it’s a shift in the style of the thing and they all keep saying it’s where it gets good. Plus Ballard gets to meet Echo for the first time
Chilled out at home on Saturday — some Blu Rays arrived, so we watched MIB just for the lulz. Out for dinner with moogal, mickstar, Tom, Maz and his bloke. Went to The Yard as The Apprentice was fully booked. (no really, the tens of empty tables were our imagination) and Hoxton Bar and Grill had a 45 minute wait. Explained the length of a yard to moo, he settled for a quarter but then regretted it afterwards. Fatty
Wandered a bit afterwards but everything was either charging entry or stupidly busy. Wasn’t helped by Mickey being a fussy tart and proclaiming “I come here for the gays, I don’t want to be in a straight bar”. I don’t think he gets Shoreditch’s metrosexuality
Waited for 35 minutes for a bus. Spent most of that time missing Berlin’s public transport system. Home then sleeps.
Woke up on Sunday rather uncharacteristically late for me (11ish) then headed out to Limehouse. Foiled once more by buses we gave up and went to Canary Wharf for lunch at GBK. I’m less and less impressed by there each time I go. I think next time it’s Burger King for me, where I can get two whopper meals for the price of a burger
Justin accompanied us for a bit too - was good to see him, he’s been zooming about in America. Turns out that we think we’ve both visited the same mall in Tampa now. Random factoids
Back to the airport for my 7:05 flight to Berlin. Got back to a freezing flat as the heating had died again. That’s three times now. London is sunny, warm, springlike and nice, Berlin is overcast, cold and wet. Bah
Moving to Charlottenburg on Friday to a flat that’s not on the ground floor and has broadband. Can’t wait!
Just bought a month long travelcard. €72. Slightly better value for money than London I feel

Sat in a bar with free wifi — hard week this week, 11 hour days and fun like that. Bah. Liam visiting at the weekend, should be good. Some of us English types are off to see Watchmen on Saturday evening, if all goes to plan. Heading home after the next beer for lots and lots of sleep. Bah.
