Went Swanning on Friday having flown in. Bumped into Lee, having dragged Mogs out too. Fun evening. Too much beer. Did my currency exchange and grabbed post from the post ofice on Saturday morning, dumped Mogs’ old bed and the chair and chest of drawers from his room. Bought cheap foods and awaited Liam’s arrival. Ran off to Dave’s for a party but overestimated my ability to be awake, that coupled with a very long walk made me feel slightly ropey so headed back at 9:30ish. Home at 11:30. Slightly ridiculous. I can get to Berlin quicker than Enfield, so it would seem. Yesterday I milled about, bought cables from Maplin, think I might also buy a WD passport 500gb come payday, refrained from buying one in there... Packed my duvet (because I can). Now I’m snug at night. Arrived at the airport late (thanks Mr Serco), arrived at the gate after it’d shut, after some hammering on the door I was whisked to a plane that was about to lose its steps by a nice flight technician type. Arrived back in Berlin to discover that my luggage had made it too. Result! Back in the flat and I discover it’s incapable of running both the dishwasher and the washing machine. So when I put my washing on and the dishwasher on just before leaving for work on Friday, unbeknownst to me I’d tripped the tripswitch. Arrived back at 10:30pm to find that my dinner was mouldy, I’d grown yoghurt out of milk and my fish fingers were decidedly stinky. Threw everything away and had supper consisting of Tuc biscuits and water. Sorted out my bedclothes and slept like a log until 7am. Grabbed my now-slightly-less-damp clothes and distributed them around various radiators in the flat until my jeans and a tshirt were dry. Whilst I waited I discovered an interesting way of washing the kitchen floor involving the dishwasher. Ergh. I think I’ll be happy when I move to Charlottenburg next month

Exploring.

Went for a wander round the Prenzlauer Berg district last night — found a marvellous bar called Zum schmutzigen Hobby — reminds me of a sex mad, campier version of the George and Dragon in Shoreditch. The wallpaper in the toilets is made entirely of hardcore porn, there’s a cock “Wall of Fame” in the bar and round the back is the Vicky Pollard lounge, complete with immense poster of the girl herself. I think it’s my new favourite place : ) Also popped into a fetish bar that was playing DVDs of Dave Gilmour in concert (Sometimes Germans scare me) and a poppy bar called Villis. Only in Berlin would you find C&A sandwiched between fetish bars. Froze my arse off a bit but it was a nice walk : ) Playing a video froze Windows 7. Which then failed to boot again. In safe mode as well. And the diagnostics failed to boot either, all of them producing a BSOD. File system corruption really shouldn’t do this to an operating system. Bah. Spent Monday evening and yesterday morning recreating a windows partition from scratch, those nice people at Vodafone don’t support the pay as you go broadband dongle under OSX, fuckers. I now have Firefox 2 PC, IE6 PC, Firefox 3 PC and Mac, IE7 PC, Firefox 3.1 beta 2 PC and IE8 PC (as well as Safari and the latest nightly of Webkit) all installed on this laptop in various VMs. Using Eclipse and Photoshop on a Mac is more time consuming than on a PC, however, no accelerator keys, which is annoying. To crop an image on a PC, hold down alt and type i then p. To crop an image on a Mac, faff about with mouses and menus. Anyone telling you Macs are faster to use doesn’t know how to use a computer properly. No idea when I’m getting broadband in the flat yet. Slightly irritating as although I can expense the cost of the BB modem, it’s €5 a day and I claim my expenses in arrears, grr. Back at the weekend, brief hugs for everyone, will be getting TJs old bed thrown out too. Should be XXLing if funds allow. First time in ages, yay! My ear still can’t hear properly after last week’s flight. Hoping flying back will fix it. Might have to get earplugs for the journey if this happens a lot. My “how to speak German” guide should be waiting for me at the flat in London when I get back. Yay!

Berlin

Monday February 16th, 2009 at 12:35am

Things that are fun about Berlin. Getting the tube home at 4am. The fact it has been snowing heavily for two days and still not only is there a bus to take me to work, but it’s on time. A lack of drunk people on the streets at 10pm. Coffee. Pretty pretty snow. Double decker trains. Smoking in bars. The fact I own a dishwhasher here. Even cheap greasy spoons serve nice food. Asking for a Doner kebab and getting a chicken one called a Döner. No gridlock. 24 hour bars that are actually 24 hour. Mostly it’s all marvellous. Now I gots to learn me some of that there German... www.flickr.com/photos/scottlet/sets/72157613860157863/ www.flickr.com/photos/scottlet/sets/72157613881070536/ www.flickr.com/photos/scottlet/sets/72157613717837148/
