Ye gods, that was like giving birth...

Thursday July 19th, 2007 at 6:40am

www.theElders.org is now up and running and live and stuff. Our baby, which has been giving me sleepless nights and long long days appears to be stable, running excellently and making people the world over happy. Got the video up there at around 10 last night, now it’s just a few small tweaks and stuff (why oh WHY does Media Player seem intent on showing me a UI when I’ve told it not to on Vista?) This is, from a coding standard, without a doubt the best site I’ve worked on. The HTML is lean, 100% valid, accessible and works semantically without stylesheet. It switches into “mobile” mode if it detects you’re browsing from a phone, giving you a different stylesheet and different images. It has an accessible mode and a text/only mode that should be viewable by every single web browser ever invented, so people still using shitty copies of Mosaic will also be able to feel the love. Plus, I got the added feelgood factor as it’s for a good cause n stuff. So yeah, we have this problem now with the fact I’ve not blogged in so very long but don’t actually have very much to talk about. Because the only thing I’ve done in the last 2 weeks is work (including all last weekend : S Went out briefly after work on Saturday, first time out in bars post smoking ban. Popped to Retro and said hi to Lloyd and then rushed off to CXR after getting bored of waiting for a bus home. Headed off to the Swan afterwards where I was accosted by a drunk man who fancied me. Which was a bit scary. Until he started going on about showgirls with his mate and then it got a lot scary. “I thought Bonnie Langford was GREAT in Doctor Who” : | : | : | So I made my escape and dragged Teej out for shits and giggles. Whilst waiting for him to arrive I cunningly managed to accidentally spark up a fag in the middle of the pub. Oops. Glared at, ran to the garden. (what? It’s force of habit!). BAD hangover Sunday, + Office = eugh. You would not believe the fun we had getting a 2.5Gb video file from Johannesburg to the web yesterday Am off Friday, TOIL. Need sleep. Need SO much sleep. And probably need shopping too. Think I might have run out of food as I’ve mostly been living off Bratwurst. Paid money into the bank yesterday. At 4:29. To stop myself going overdrawn. It’s showing up as having hit my account today, not yesterday. And my account’s showing the account charge and then showing a refund for the same amount. Bless Barclays heh. Right. Spose I’d better go work really. Talk to you lovely people soon : )

3gp:https://www.freakcity.net/test/11837623984786_1.3gp in my hotel room in mildenhall but I cunningly forgot to bring a charger for my almost dead phone. Bah. Going out for chinese with my sister-in-law in a bit, still hungover. Bah. Long day at work and I’m shagged. Have the window open and am listening to the cars zoom past and the witty banter of the doorman. ("I wish there was a word harsher than ‘cunt’ I could call you..."). Silly. I’m currently wondering if the barman is in the gayers. Apparently Cati has a lesbian DJ and mildenhall is the top lesbian town to be or something. Weird ass. I remember coming here when I was little. It’s strange...

The Crushing Hangover

Friday July 6th, 2007 at 13:12pm

Soooo...I’ve been a bit quiet recently. Busy busy working on work’s top secret thingy as well as bits of freakcity. I’ve spent about a week now writing dotnet which is kinda funny as I don’t know it. Seems straightforward tho so I don’t mind. It’s a welcome change from Orange : ) Babylon 5: The Lost Tales was apparently the 6th most popular “genre” title on Amazon last month. Which is pretty impressive as it’s not yet been released. Went out to the swan last night. Now my head hurts. Sat outside having a naughty fag and listening to all the gays whining about the smoking ban was funny. Especially as they kept telling me “This is a disgrace” etc and I kept disagreeing lovingly with them. Coz I quite like the ban. Mostly because I quite like the outside of pubs but like the inside less and so I’m happy standing outside, smoking or not. Damn I’m selfish. Posted today’s word of the day to thingbox earlier. Had to join and everything. Then had to delete myself and everything. People clearly don’t appreciate the effort I put in. Tried to watch Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein on Wednesday. Tried really hard. Failed. It’s unutterably shit. Fortunately I only spent about £3 on it. Off to Bury tonight to go visit Owen’s sister Cati and make her a website. So I have the heaviest rucksack in the universe with me. Big and bulky. And I have a beard. Maybe I should shoe polish my head and scare people on the tube... building Dom a PC at the moment, a copy of mine, so I bought 2x Opteron 250s on eBay for £31. Bonza! And they fricken work. So he gets my old chips free instead of having to pay £150ish for new ones, which is great. I finally worked out how to get them to frequency scale correctly under Vista64 so they’re amazingly quiet and low powered and stuff. Inadvertently I also discovered a bug in the k8-powernow kernel module in the latest linux kernel which means it scales fine for a bit and then randomly freezes everything in the GUI after a few minutes. Don’t know if it’s an incompatibility between beryl and it or NVIDIA’s scary binary blob and it but will investigate at some point later. Still can’t get sleep to work under Vista. Bah. Dom’s PC is sexy. Brand new coolermaster aluminium wave case looks gorgeous. I may get one for novak sometime. So far I’ve spent about £400 and it’s almost complete, merely needs ram and a PSU, which is very very cool indeed. Play.com have a summer sale on. Which is a bad thing. Bah. I think I need a bigger bookshelf now ; ) My head hurts. Oh well, back to workies x
