Watched The Fountain last night. It’s a beautiful film, stunningly shot, wonderfully scored by Clint Mansell and the Kronos Quartet and featuring Mogwai — outstanding performances from both Rachel Weisz and Hugh Jackman. Originally meant to star Brad Pitt, he quit amid fears that the plot would be too complex for cinemagoers. And it’s pretty complex. Definitely going to have to watch it more than once and see what else I can fathom. As with the original cut of Donnie Darko you’re left with a vague feeling that there’s a key to it all that’s just out of reach and so you’re left thinking about what you’ve just seen and trying to make sense of it. I’d give it 5 stars just for being by Darren Aronofsky but I suspect TJ wouldn’t be as kind as me. Not the kind of film one idly puts on in the background whilst washing up, definitely a visual feast. Some painful moments, watching a man tattoo himself with a fountain pen being one. These are countered by overachingly beautiful imagery of galaxies, the autumn gold of the palette, Rachel Weisz’s beauty in both the role of Izzy and Queen Isabel of Spain and the incredible sets. You’re left with the feeling that you’ve just witnessed a rare thing of beauty whilst you frantically try and work out what the hell just happened. Been looking into the google API and doing more stuff with data here. Going to implement a solution that lets you “ping” google’s blogging service when you write a new blog, which means it’ll instantly be accessible to Google’s archive. Which’ll be optional, of course. Also thinking about changing meta tags per page to more accurately reflect what’s on the page. Almost finished my google gadget. Then Friday I start work on some sooper top secret stuff that’s going to be amazing. Well, I’ll think it’s amazing, you lot’ll just be like “oh”. Sushi for lunch. Mmm. Bought hazelnuts too. Double mmm. Watch how fat I become!
