Musings on a world I am no longer sure about
Bleh.
random! 036 (Small).jpg For a change, I thought I’d go out Friday night, get wankered, and sleep through all of Saturday.
Just for a change
Owen an Danny came out...we ended up back at the flat watching Angel (god this week’s was good) and Dune (all 4 hours of it). I think I passed out at some point, so I went and crawled into bed at about 6am. There was already an Owen in it so I got cuddles, which was nice
Danny left at about 12, he has been having problems with his computer. Basically the RAID card appears to have exploded and killed his drives
so he was gonna wander off and try and fix it all.
Owen left at about 3ish I think and I went back to bed until about 5. Felt shitty, so went back to bed *again* at about 6, woke up at 11:30pm and decided I was too fucked to go out...so went back to bed and woke up at 7am.
Oops.
Have lots to do today, but feel very knackered and drained so might manage some washing up and that’s about it at a guess.
Been taking random pics of random shit too...yay
Found JJ on gay.com chat...so caught up a bit, not chatted to him for aaaages, which was nice. He has a really sweet pic of him on his profile. Awww....
Have a bloke coming over for pics in a bit...gonna try with the Big Butch Camera and see if I can get any better results...

LOL
Ken on the MT list sums up the current court case and stuff: Prosecution: “It was HER.... there... that... GIRL!!! She did it...” Defence “It’s a fair cop guv, I went and gorn and dunnit. It were me right enough, you’ve got me bang to rights and done up like a kipper” Prosecution “Fuck...” Defence “Yep, that was me right enough. Breach of contract, breach of confidentiality. Official Secrets Act? HAH! I spit on your draconian bullshit” Prosecution “We’d like to drop all charges, please” Judge “WTF???” Press “WTF???” Public “HUH?” Tony “We’re only acting in the best interest of the defence and its best not too look too hard at these things or the...ooooh look pretty lights..” Press “WTF???” Public “HUH?” Claire Short (sensing a bandwagon to be leapt upon) “Oh, and we were spying on Kofi Annan too...” Tony “Fuck... I think I swallowed my grin” Press “oofyeh!” Public “Oh for fucks sake, here we go AGAIN” Meanwhile, in Libya, one President Gaddafi was seen pissing himself laughing... “What a lunatic! And they said I was mad???” Somebody, somewhere is drawing some pictures for Shrub, slowly, to help him understanderise.

Excuse me whilst I rant...
Fishy with kids in Iraq’s National Theatre “Ministers are to review the effectiveness of the Official Secrets Act after the collapse of the case against Mrs Gun” Claims the Evil World of Daily Mail Journalists via today’s Metro.
Now excuse me, but the prosecution called off the case - not because it collapsed - but because the woman in question acted legally if the war in Iraq was illegal and the government doesn’t want the legality of the war to be brought into question.
And so Tony “No More Spin” Bliar and chums are going to spin it so it appears the OSA is at fault and will doubtless be “strengthened” to make sure this kind of thing doesn’t go unpunished. Gah!
Must remember to go into politics. With a shotgun. Or maybe a hacksaw.
So...if you’re foreign you don’t get benefits. If you look Arabic you can be held indefinitely without charge. If you’re suspected of being a terrorist you have to prove you’re not. And we need to opt out of more of the Human Rights Act because it interferes with our “security”. Oh, and by the way, we accept confessions obtained under duress now, so we reserve the right to ship you off to Egypt for “special” questioning, OK?
All in the name of protecting our “freedom”.
But after this is over will there be enough freedom left to protect?
""Those who are willing to sacrifice essential freedom for security deserve neither." - Benjamin Franklin
Listening to The Wall on the way in...mmmMMmm. Not done in a very long time.
Popped into the pub yesterday after a long day’s work annoying programmers by requesting additional features that were in the design, but they seemed to not realise would be needed.
Had a couple of pints, chatted a bit to people, they all went for food and I went to CXR for a pint and to see who was about...recognised someone from shagdar but that was about it...
Got home, watched Angel, which was rather good. Pootled a bit online and went to bed at 1am. Ooops.
In today pretty much early - more JSP goodness. Think I may have to test some stuff on the mac today, which is a bit evil, but hey. Bodged a bit of JSP to make the page display correctly and get round afforementioned oversight. Dave looks hungover. He got in at 3am. Guess he gets a bigger oops than me!
Everyone seems very quiet today in the office - it can’t be the pub, there were only about ten of us...
Fishy has uploaded pics to the www.circus2iraq.org gallery, showing them in Haifa (Palestinian refugee camp) and both Magreb and the IDP camp near Baghdad in Iraq - go look.
I’ll be writing an edit function for them at the weekend I think - as otherwise I’m correcting Fishy’s spelling by SQL
On Monday, the US Education Secretary labeled the nation’s largest teachers’ union a “terrorist organization” after the union had the cheek to complain that education was being under-funded. The Teachers union president replied, "This is the kind of rhetoric we have come to expect from this administration whenever one challenges its world view." - Schnews

Big Headed People
The song is by Evanescence, have grabbed a better quality copy and bunged it on my Palm...Pretty...glad it’s by someone good and not Jewel or something...
Getting off the DLR at Tower, I am confronted by a man with a big plastic head offering free membership to the local gym. Most curious!
So I made the gallery work on www.circus2iraq.org - hopefully fisheye will be able to use it...have taken the pic size restriction off- so he should be able to upload anything he wants now....
Spent the rest of the evening ripping CDs to low quality Ogg
I now have 12 albums (at least one of which is a double - The Wall) and 20 or so random other songs sat on my Palm at nearly CD quality
It occurs to me that I think I’ve spent more on software for the Palm than I ever did for a PC...
So I’m currently listening to Joe Brown’s lil girl Sam’s “Your love is all” rather loudly whilst rattling to work on the District line.
The Evading Standards and Metro seem quite keen on this woman who told the press about the UK/US bugging of the UN...and how she’s a “whistleblower” who “escaped” punishment...it’s almost like they’re happy that the government looks stupid but they can’t quite bring themselves to approve of this naughty behaviour by someone who’s *not* a rich Tory...I shall try and snatch a peek at the Mail later as that usually doesn’t hide it’s feelings...Tho if they mention whistleblower I may have to write to them and ask if they mean it as an insult
Ah well...nearly at work...and I think my graffiti is improving!
Hungry, but need to cut down on my crisps intake...Have a strange urge for marmite on toast now. Odd!

Long day at work...
Pretty sunset though! Was a bit distracted all day...not really very sure why. Spent lunchtime playing with Ogg more...am going to go home and encode some stuff I think.
Underwhelmed with the support for SD cards in the T3 it’s oh so very slow :(
Loud office argument between PM and BA led to the programming lead wandering over..."Do you guys want to take this argument elsewhere? It’s far more interesting than our work and we’re having trouble concentrating"...titter.
Coo... This pTunes thing can even crossfade between mp3 and Ogg!
So. Tonight I do more circus...Sam was online today...got an error uploading pics...helpfully couldn’t tell me what the error was, mind :)
May see if I can work out persits well enough to do on the fly upload resizing or something. Might come in handy for here too, I guess. Why do I push down so hard on the screen when writing grafitti? Programming lead’s girlfy managed to scratch the screen on his...I offered a screenguard but he thinks it may be a little too late for that.
Bleh. Only at St James’ Park and I’m bored. Wonder what I can eat tonight :)
In other news...er...that’s about it really...Nikki’s mum might want my old camera...meaning I *have* to get good with my new one...Phil has a mate who wants a website, apparently...My spelling seems to be getting worse, and it/I am annoying Igster, or so it would seem. =>Caring Face
I appear to have some amazingly bizarre Harry Connick Jr on this thing. He’s such a flash bastard pianist when on this planet!
Definitely going to re rip the Requiem for a Dream soundtrack - these 96k mp3s are a bit pants really.
Had a huge poster put up on my wall at work, of a huge man with blond hair and a tan...sat astride a quad..."look! You can almost see up his shorts", claims Rach. I’m never going to be able to concentrate again...well, would you? 20ft man with something large and throbbing between his legs?
Who is “My Immortal” written by? I guess it’s from the Buffy soundtrack...It’s very pretty though. Gorgeous piano and strings parts
/"I’m so tired of being here/suppressed by all my childish fears/and if you have to leave/I wish that you would just leave/because your prescence still lingers here/and it won’t leave me alone...These wounds won’t seem to heal/this pain is just too real/there’s just too much that time cannot erase..."/
Very pretty lyrics...

trapped!
So I was very late this morning. The doors broke on my tube, leaving us stuck in a carriage at Westminster for ten minutes whilst they tried to open them. I am so glad it’s not summer yet...
It snowed a bit yesterday, which was fun
Spent last night writing code to enable Sam + peeps to upload piccies whilst they’re out there...so they now have a very basic photo album...tonight I need to write a “client” end so people visiting the website can see the pics...
And some way that the Circus peeps can edit the galleries may be useful too
Fiddled with the journals - may do a bit of a rewrite at some point as they’re a bit flaky, think I’ve thought up a better way of doing them that’ll make them a bit quicker.
Not sure if I should do Northampton this weekend, as I have lots to do and am meant to be in Norwich anyway. I could really just do with a weekend of catchup....and Mother’s visiting at some point I think - tho can’t remember if it’s this weekend or not.
I should keep a diary

Workette and thingies
Dead chuffed with this piccy, and so was he Well...long weekend...spent lots of it chilling out with James, lots of it messing about with bits of computer, taking pics, going out shopping, generally doing all the bits that I didn’t need to do instead of looking at my tax
Ah well...
Did pics for a lovely man called Chris on Saturday, did pics for an even lovelier man yesterday (see left)...took more pics of sunset.
Got frustrated with n00 camera as I can take better pics with the old one...should really try my hardest to make the new one work right I think, it just has a couple of niggly things that annoy me. Firstly, there’s no way to change the length of time the timer goes on for - I shall probably be finding the remote control info and beaming it on my palm...
Secondly, the flash is far too auto for my liking...
Got to do some proper JSP today, am getting to grips with struts and how they relate to taglibs (they’re a big predefined taglib AFAIK that saves you needing to write your own for common HTML elements) and how the beans all work behind the page. Think I may try and port bits of this site to JSP just to see if I can - tho the idea of writing everything from scratch again is a tad daunting...
Tried to make the front page a little more standards compliant and then promptly gave up again...will have to set aside more time for that
Spent some time making Circus2Iraq run a little better too...still seems strange that I have a friend running about Iraq dressed as a clown, but hey!
He apparently changed the “Fox News” sign on the door of the Fox bit near Saddam’s palace to read “Fox sucks Bush’s cock”...and then had a slash in Saddam’s bog. The classy fella
Need to make him a picture gallery so he can upload piccies soon. Need to make the diary in here work better too. Oh, too much to do and not enough time!

Drink. Feck. Arse
I went to this “new starter” drink thing on Thursday. Lots of people there. Free bar. Much drunkenness. Arse
Slept much of yesterday, James came over, kinda got up eventually to watch a somewhat surreal Angel (he gets turned into a puppet, with ickle fluffy fangs an everything)
Need to get some (hopefully cheap) bits for the server - want a P4 mobo + chip as cheap as I can get one, so off to the puter fairs later
Should really tidy up some of my flat too...it’s a mess and a half at the moment. Need coffee and stuff an all...
Oh it’s all go today!
Might take James to Spitz for lunch - suspect he needs to get out and about a bit at the moment and generally chill out and stuff

WAI. Waa.
Owen’s site went live. It’s very very pretty, and 100% accessable. Marvellous bit of work
Am awfully impressed!
Finished my first page and all the scripting on it. Am gonna have a meeting in a bit with Chris + Jonny and work out if we’re anywhere near able to put stuff in it and make it into a Real Page(TM) instead of just boring HTML

homeward bound
Well. Got the page done, got the scripts done, got the thing tested on WinNT 4 and it broke a bit. then again, I don’t ever remember IE 5.5 looking like IE 3 and it was misbehaving somewhat, so I suspect it might just be a broken version...
Am soooo sleepy today. Want a fag. Want a beer. Will be good though, unless anyone is out...suspect I shall probably geek a bit more and get some sleep. Might even wash up some
The district line appears to be being crap tonight...unshocker - It has just taken 20 minutes from hammersmith to Earls Court. Bleh. I wanna be at home, dammit.
Have to set up Slack for Palm access too, later. Am hoping, having seen the news about it, that there will be some way to upgrade this to PalmOS 6. Suspect there won’t be though

scrolly goodness
Got the mouse wheel working fine in the end, just have to work out if I can find something to install that lets me control buttons 6 and 7 on the intellimoose... Fiddling with the calendar object I wrote some, it’s based on the Jscript one on here, but entirely client side JavaScript. It’s also about 4 times smaller than the huge old bloaty thing we had on the site. Just need to make it an object that gets all its info from the forms...

Sunny spring
Hm. Suspect I may be late for work. bah. Spent lots of last night playing with XF86 4.3.993 - quite pretty, nice fount rendering and stuff. Still, I wish someone’d just write a small and lightweight X server for NVidia... would love to have groovy stuff like FSAA across the whole desktop, not just the fonts on it.
Still, hours of fun for me @ the weekend. Which will be a long weekend as I have Friday/Monday off. Hoping to modify the calendar thing and make it into more of a diary... Might also change the UI some to make it lighter and more accessible. I shall also try and work out why Java kills my copies of Mozilla and Firebird
This tube driver has verbal diahorrea...
Have a bloke coming over on Saturday for pics...His are already excellent, so it should be a challenge!
Need to go somewhere nice at some point this weekend too, to test drive the camera properly, as I haven’t done yet. Might go to Brighton or something and wander around looking like a tourist...Might also phone someone at Canary Wharf and/or City hall and see if I’m allowed to go up and take pics
Why do ’tards on phones look confused when we go into a tunnel and their gossip partner gets cut off? “hello? HELLO?!” *sigh*
It seems that whenever I do any development on FreakCity, people start to use it more...curious...
Bleh. 9:22 and only just at Earls Court. Still, it’s a lovely sunny morning so can’t complain.
Got a letter from the Inland Revenue yesterday. Suspect I should work out How much I actually earned from June - Jan at some point soon
Fab. there at last. 3 minutes to get to the office. Oopsie!

Hah!
Remote reboot failed. Macs suck. CSS hacks rock. I now have a working linux desktop again and it rocks rather lovelily
Just need to do some fiddlybits to make sure it all works ok now and I’ll be sorted
Not having a scroll wheel at the moment’s a pain in the arse

Tuesday
Attempted to install slackware and NForce drivers in 30 minutes this morning. It appears to have worked ok, left it slapt-get --dist-upgrading whilst I travel to work. For my next trick I shall attempt to remotely reboot into the new kernel without losing the network card
Went to Rochelle’s last night to plot the future of www.khrp.org - it’s going to be all snazzy and stuff and DB driven... Hopefully anyway, as long as I can learn enough PHP...Mark, who she lives with, will be doing lots of the backend stuff. He has this really cool case that’s silent and has these HUGE blue case lights...Rather funky, I thought
Got a design for the front page of hotels, not been signed off yet, but we’re starting anyway. The multiple class thing I first started using on this site I’ve greatly expanded on and extended for the stylesheet there, seperating out font, borders, margin and colour makes for much smaller CSS files:
.l10 { padding-left:+10px; } .red { color:#F00; } .body { font-family:helvetica; line-height:150%; }...can then be combined with each other as in:
class="red l10 body"...to apply the styles correctly. Comedy bug on the Mac, if you don’t put the text colour last it seems to be eevil and paint the whole block level element containing it in that colour. How we laughed... Am considering trying to learn enough about programming to write an XML producing bit of blogging software for the Palm and an upload feature...

weekend fun
Rudi 088 (Small).jpg Fri night got drunk with Danny whilst watching Children of Dune and installing Slackware 9.1 on his laptop. Urgh. Stayed up too late trying to get it to all work right, and was in no fit state to visit my aunt on Saturday for lunch, which was bad of me.
Very sleepy me managed about an hour then headed off home again and went to bed for a while. Missed spiritusmundispit’s 22nd party which was a shame but just didn’t feel right about it. Bit down coz it was valentines day and I wasn’t with the person I love but hey, shit happens...
Totally failed to tidy much of the flat today and totally failed to get the correct heatsink for the server and so having a bad day. Made up for it a bit by doing Rudi’s pics for him which went OK, need to learn my camera a bit better before I do that again...
Did loads of bits for freakcity, added support for mozilla’s navigation toolbar, am going to write a freakcity sidebar soon that does all the useful bits I need it to for someone to stay online on the site.
Added pretty icons to mail and journal, am thinking about redoing the site a bit...will redo the logo first I think and make it a proper vector image...might make some freakcity graphics for people to bung on their websites if they want to too. Not really sure yet.
Drunken chat with John, our work BA in the pub on Friday...was cool. Knackered now and not looking forward to work again tomorrow, but hey. Maybe I’ll get a decent night’s sleep or something.
Been on Orkut, nosing about, made a freakcity group on there...joined the Pink Floyd one too...
Off to bed. Night xx

District line: “Not dead, merely resting” claim experts...
Sat on tube (unshocker) the district line is broke for a change. Spent the day fiddling with Javascript bits. Cut down on the huge chunks of code in bits of it, which was good. Camera is lovely, Rudi was chatting to me by MSN and wants more pics...wonder how feasable a trip to visit James in France would be? Have installed Slackware on the lappy...just patched X for 2d Acceleration and installed Mplayer too so will test that all when I get home in a few hours ;( Installed KDE 3.2 as well... It’s really quite nippy. Found a port of apt too, which rocks rather. Got Dee’s site finished just in time for email on the server to break. Typical. Oh well, am seeing them at the weekend. Have been volunteered to remove the pr0n that Oliver managed to install somehow whilst surfing the interweb. In other news...Rich appears to have vanished, and it’s Smee’s party at the weekend. Also, I am wondering if I should acquire some backing for the site as sites like this appear to be all the rage at the moment... My flat is a mess. Anyone want to clean it for me?

Weekend...
Rob eats an unpie 111 (Medium).jpg So. Went out on Friday. Didn’t pull this week. Dammit
Met Boxx & Andrew in the pub tho, which was nice - was there with Owen and Danny.
They went saunaing. I went home. Stayed up chatting for ages, Danny came back, watched some of the finales of Buffy, he went again, stayed up until 2pm Saturday, then went to bed. Woops
Woke up at about 11pm, chatted for a bit, went back to bed.
Got up at 8am this morning. Did a bit of work. Did a bit of surfing. Did a bit of washing up. Went to Greenwich with Smee to take pretty pretty pics. Took pretty pretty pics. Went home. Was fun. Ate M&S Salmon. Nawty of me

Am I still ill? (again)
Sat on the tube, which appears to be late again. Moved office, we’re now round the corner from where we were in the new bit. I got a window seat, so I get a view out over Hammersmith, which is very pretty. Well, I say window, I really mean wall, as the windows are floor to ceiling...
So, I’ve got my new Palm, which is very very sexy. Downloaded something called Mmplayer, the mobile media player... I can now play Xvid and DivX on it
Bought loads of bits for it too, including a 512M SD card, which I filled full of mp3s and video...
Also, I ordered a new camera... the Canon EOS300D - sex on legs! It will hopefully appear today at some point, then I can spend the day doing funkeh pictures. Yay
Seem to be coming down with flu or something tho... I have a really sore throat
