trying to scrape together enough cash for my prescription doesn’t appear to be working very well...doesn’t help that I’m soo damn sleepy at the moment, although I am feeling a little better than I did yesterday : ) Speaking of which, was dead chuffed with fire.ethosuk.org.uk/~scott/coolpic.jpg : ) Will show it to Roberto[1] when he wakes up Think I might give up on the whole trying to get cash for photos at short notice thing and just dig out my chequebook. In good news, BA have refunded the money for my Tungsten, including £5 postage (I’ll let them off the extra 20p) after I wrote a distinctly snotty letter to them : D In bad news, I went over my limit by £1.46 and so Barclays, in their wisdom, have charged me £20 for it. Bastards. Anyways, here is that letter in full: British Airways Customer Service British Airways Inflight Retail, Freepost (OF 438) Thame, Oxon, OX9 3LJ Dear Sir or Madam: Subject: In Flight Duty Free purchase I am writing to you because I would like a refund on the Palm Tungsten T that I purchased from the duty free trolley on your flight BA2036 from Orlando to Heathrow on the 4th July. Not only was the Palm Tungsten you sold me, not state of the art, but indeed a model about to be phased out, but the special duty free price I paid for it was actually £70 more than it is on sale for in PC World, including VAT. So I have sent it back to you, boxed, with all the attachments and in the condition I purchased it, with the receipt and would like you to refund me the £350 I paid for it Regards, Signed [1] I appear to have acquired a sortofloger - he’s asleep on the sofa at the moment as he’s kinda homeless and I’m a soft touch. He seems a nice bloke tho so I don’t really mind at the moment I guess...

Ill. Dammit, I hate being ill - was off work yesterday, am off work today - sore throat, cough, hot+cold, just wanna sleeep lots. : ( Still, means I get to giggle at freaks in gay.com chat www.intl-uk.gay.com/personals/profile/view.html?name=scorpionbrazil81 He says “USA here, just wanted to warn you guys about some black brazillian guy named Tito. He stole 4 people in the US and went to London. So be careful boys. He won’t stop!!!!!!!!!!” ...as if each exclamation mark would somehow make his freaky story somewhat truer...

I am constantly amazed how a company that manages every day to be late can manage to get me to work just as late, yet when they are late on the way back, still arrive at London Bridge on time. Stunning : )

Rain rain rain rain rain

Friday July 25th, 2003 at 12:59am

Finished all the eBooks I’d got on my palm yesterday - so I had to make some more. Chose “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale” by Philip K Dick. Boy does he need to learn to write more! I’d finished by the time I was halfway here...I shall be soo bored on the way home I might have to sleep or something. That’s if I can manage not to die of hypothermia : D It’s very very kind of the weather to try and get all the rain out of its system ahead of the fun tomorrow, but I was somewhat disheartened by its decision to instead piss it down all over me on the way to work. And its decision to stop as soon as I get on a train and then start again once I got off at the other end did nothing to improve my opinion of it : )

a) I got a new and funkier train today b) I got loaded with more work : S(but hey, I’ll cope) c) There seem to be quite a few members here now d) I got the time counting thing to work right : D e) I’ve changed the database to accomodate public profiles (which will keep SpiritusMundiSpit happy at least, the exhibitionist whore ; ) So now, all I have to do is add code to create public profiles and then hey presto, it’ll all work : D

Lunching. Mmm

Wednesday July 23rd, 2003 at 12:03am

Missed the right train because Tower Bridge opened on me again. The bastards : D Think that it’s deeply suspicious that it only ever seems to open to let something that looks like a wherry through...and that this wherry like boat sails forlornly through the gap and then stops 100 yards from the bridge, in anticipation of the exciting sail back in the evening. Which doubtless will happen - just when I want to get home. Ah well, only 5 minutes late... Thinking about doing the Swan again tonight, though I’m not sure how asleep I’ll be tomorrow if I do it. Don’t think I’m allowed to drink if I do though, so not sure if I can manage sobriety as well as coping with Candy, but hey, could be a laugh.

The Kettle here is very surreal. You press the button and then it makes that low humming noise of power, usually associated with an electric train as it moves off the station. Then, seconds later and hey presto, the water’s boiled. Kinda grooovy : )

lunching with wolves

Monday July 21st, 2003 at 12:28am

Still at a loss as to why his database code is all screwy, our intrepid hero considers rewriting the backend so it jsut slaps it all in the damn database in the correct order as opposed to doing surreal and funkeh things to the database results. *munch of sandwich* Well...4 people so far seem interested in buying the keyboard - it’s a shame to see it go, but I’f rather lose it than my job I guess : S Have to finish the KHRP stuff tonight, which may mean taking a break from here for the evening *sulk* Still...when it’s done and I’ve stopped procrastinating it’ll all be better. Well, I hope it’ll all be better, at any rate ; )

Sleepy Sunday

Sunday July 20th, 2003 at 22:22pm

22:11 - Nikki came to visit today, so we wandered about Spitalfields, she played me some of her an Lenny’s stuff on tape (which was really good) and then we traipsed off to the South Bank for afternoon tea. We got sidetracked by the pretty prettyness of Shad Thames - biiig old warehouses that have been done up, and turned into flats and the like. Graham’s gallery is still there, with an ickle sign on it saying “Reopening March”...found this somewhat amusing as the last time I saw Graham he was telling me how he’d quit the gallery and was going back to college to become a lawyer so he could get money outta his ex wife. Or something : ) So we wandered about Butler’s Wharf and Shad Thames, stopped in Browns for some food and cups of tea, no seats outside so we made do with air con instead. Still not entirely sure what the point is in a teapot that’s precisely big enough for a single cup of tea - why not just put a teabag in the cup and save yourself the hassle - but hey, the food was nice! Nikki then had to rush off to get a train back to sunny Norwich, leaving myself and James wandering about. We decided to wander up to the GLA building - it’s open Sundays for sightseeing. The view up there is amazing, could see everything from Canary Wharf to Battersea Power Station. Took plenty of pics of the inside and the outside and of the view - I really ought to finish www.exhibitlondon.com - could put lots of these pics on it I think. Some were really nice. Got back and did some touch up code to the site - I’d done a new set of logos earlier, and made it all a bit prettier. We’re picking up quite a few members now, there were 10 people online all at once earlier, I was very impressed indeed - didn’t seem very slow at all - wonder if it’d manage 100 ; )

Dull pointless tedium

Friday July 18th, 2003 at 19:59pm

18-7-03 8:06 - Bah. I can feel it’s going to be a bad day already. Had an early night that was somewhat upset by puppy waking me at 9pm (did I mention it was an early night? ; ). He wanted to drag me to the SM gays discovery night to learn how to abuse titties properly, or something...but I think he could sense the just-woken-upness of me and so he just played about on my laptop for a bit whilst I thought up new forums. I was crap at it ; ) Ugh. Nobody should have to look at Croydon this early in the morning. Still, the Brighton train is on the boards as being on time, which will be a first! Fun for today...I was so asleep last night that I forgot to turn my washing machine on, so my meeting with the Big Boss this morning sees me unshaved and in a tshirt = ) Am considering a modification to the blog code to make it a bit smarter. Would be nice to be able to blog throughout the day and for the code to work out if I’d already blogged that day and to append further entries to the day’s blog with a timestamp...that, I think, would be cool : ) 19:57 - Long day : S James’s ickle adaptor thingy has arrived in the post, so he can use his fabby keyboard from the US with his iPaq - and I can’t find my shorts. Not that the two are linked, mind, tho come to think of it, they are a similar colour and they did vanish at the same time as the adaptor arrived. Coincidence? Well...I have some extra work to do at the weekend, as well as the KHRP and the FreakCity stuff, so I think I’m gonna say fuck it all an go and get drunk : D Responsibility is the sole preserve of the responsible ; )

Well...bike’s fixed now, but cost nearly £100 to sort out : S Got all the work done that I needed to, even though I was knackered (all my own fault) having gone out last night and I’ve even tinkered with bits of the site. Think that maybe I’ll be wanting to have an early night ; )

Shitty trains, buses and tubes

Tuesday July 15th, 2003 at 22:05pm

7:58 - On the train again Bit of a rush getting here...I should know better than to write code in the mornings, it always distracts me : ) Nearly finished the code for freakcity...just got to add all this to the database, so that there’s at least one blog online : D Ooh. Shouty drama then, as someone tried to get on the train whilst it was moving...muppets. Today I get to look forward to meetings, meetings and more meetings. And tonight I get to look forward to taking my bike to be fixed. The excitement of it all! Keep trying to think up better and better RegExps for FC but there’s little point in that on the train...writing them in Graffiti is practically impossible (for me, at any rate ; ) “When it’s fall in New York, the air smells as if someone’s been frying goats in it, and if you’re keen to breathe, the best plan is to open a window and stick your head in a building” Finished God Emperor...it’s soo sad...Think I should probably find the next one...Started on Mostly Harmless...I’ll miss Douglas Adams’ wit : ( 17:50 - It’s gorgeous weather. Absolutely stunning. No wind in sight. So of course the whole train network is broke. And the train, which did eventually turn up has broken too. So I’m stood on a platform next to it, waiting to see if they can mend it before I melt. 22:00 - The train was fucked, so we had to get another one. The other one didn’t go to London Bridge so I had to change at E Croydon for another one. Only all the trains were fucked by this point, meaning the train I needed was delayed by 30 minutes - having got to London Bridge, I then (as usual) got the tube to Bank, and got out just in time to hear the klaxons wailing and a voice telling us to evacuate the station - I jumped on the nearest tube (back to London Bridge) and then attempted the Jubilee Line, which was apparently bored of the correct speed and wanted to slow down some so it could play with the ickle meeces on the track. Or something. So all in all, it took me 3 hours to get home. I really /_really_/ need to start working from home! So I think I’ll finish my day by finishing off the blog code so everyone else can read this!

Woops. My bad

Monday July 14th, 2003 at 5:00am

7:34 - Coo! I should really write in this more. Have spent a week being generally jetlagged, writing code until 2am, being a hermit, etc. Have written all but the blog bit of freakcity - will try and do that tonight. Rah! My bike broke somewhat, last week...Got on the train and it was fine, got off it and it was jammed in top gear : SSo on Weds it’s being fixed and upgraded...means I’ve been on public transport all week - interesting ; ) Have hosted freakcity in the US...means I can get technical support in the evenings, tho I had to write a date formatter to put the date stuff in the right format and timezone, which was fun! Was Sal’s 21st on Saturday, Very drunk people are funny... Gave him my old Palm V, as I’d used it for about a week only, he seemed suitably impressed at any rate...I was still recovering from Friday and so didn’t partake :O) Friday, I was in such a state having worked all week and stuff, that I managed to forget my doorkeys...so got an impromptu visit from Owen and Dave with a spare one...picked Owen’s brain for RegExp stuff, which I then got running all on my own anyways...got to about 9:30 and I thought “fuck it” and went into town for a drink...found Danny and James at CXR, then all buggered off to Retro to meet Dave. Couldn’t be arsed with going to Popstarz with them so opted for a quiet drink at The Swan instead. Dave Lynn was on form, having been told by one of the girly hecklers that he clashed with the decor. Too Much Vodka later and I arrive home and write even more regexp code. Have decided they make more sense when pissed : D Almost finished God Emperor of Dune. It’s quite cool, though it is becoming apparent quite how much these books are a vehicle for the author’s belief. Plus, it’s somewhat strange having a character called Siona, but with none of the other characters making arse jokes and saying “ooh deary me...” 12:41 - Thought for the day: Why does the soap in public toilets always look like something else? And why do mirrors in public toilets always provide a good view of the urinals when you’re drying your hands? 15:53 - Bleh. Sooo tired...Ah well, only an hour left...if I can keep my eyes open…

Heading home

Friday July 4th, 2003 at 5:00am

9:15 - Yesterday was pretty uneventful - minor strops aside, went and played on the tram after work - very pretty...visited the surreally named Ybor City and took lots of pretty pretty pictures :o) Think I spotted a gay bar, but not sure as I think it was being incognito... The trams are fun, they run every day until 11pm, and $3 gets you an all day pass. They have these funky wood and metal bench seats, there’s a handle on top and this sets the direction the seat faces :o) 17:16 - On the plane. Having stuffed myself with crackers and crisps in the departure lounge, I’m heading up over Florida on the way home. Bought lots of voddie and some Veuve in duty free, couldn’t think of anything else to get though. Spent the morning in Ybor City again, figured it’d be something to do before my car arrived at 1:30. Well, I spent the morning trying to fix Gaz’s computer, and *then* went to Ybor City. Gaz’s carefully built by me server apparently died completely after a powercut. I reckon Gaz just fell over the lead, meself ; ) It was very hot out - 29°C in the shade according to the bellboy’s thermometer...so wandering about in the sun was tiring and sweaty, tho it was a lot less humid today so wasn’t all bad I guess. Pretty dead out too, apart from down by Channelside, which was full of old people celebrating...wandered through by the aquarium on he way home, lots of bouncy type things and stuff, plus a fabulous misty corridor (fnar) that squirts a fine cooling mist of water on you as you go through it. Got back to the hotel to pick up all my bits and pieces to find a wizened old southern fellow in a cheap suit and shades mispronouncing my name to the bellboys - that’d be my driver then. Introduced myself and then he wandered off to get the limo..."let me get that, Sir", he says pointing to my holdall - I try and surpress a grin as he just about manages to get it into the trunk. Nice car, as Eevil cars go...big an leatherclad on the inside...there’s something very nice about leather car seats ; ) He spends some time telling me the history of Harbour Island (so riveting I’ve forgotten it all) and then sees that I’m not caring too much and stops. Or so I think, until I notice his hand movements and his head nodding and shaking, at which point I star to suspect he merely has an internal monologue that he puts on speaker from time to time. We stop, somewhere in the gorgeously named Plant City for supplies (I need water and his endless coffee cup seems dangerously low and in need of a refill) so we pop into a Chevron service station somewhere untouched by evolution. They sell boiled peanuts. Sat in a big vat of water. They look vile. I don’t think about it ; ) Get to the airport, duty free, stuff my face in the BA lounge, free voddie (mmMMMMmm) and then pick up duty free and on plane, which was suspiciously early! Dead here on the plane, can’t be more than 20 business class people on it, so I’m able to sneak out of my allocated seat and steal a window seat, which is very cool as I just got a pretty good pic of Cape Canaveral out the window as we flew overhead : )

We’re not in Kansas any more

Wednesday July 2nd, 2003 at 5:00am

7:49 - Decided on a wander about last night, so I went Downtown - Everywhere was dead, though I got some nice pictures of derelict buildings and stuff, very pretty ;O) Also went and visited the pool, which was bizzarre...The only way to get there is to go up to the third floor and then walk to another lift...a very old one...which goes right down to the pool...kinda giving it an air of an “Unsupported service, use at own risk” type thing. 17:55 - off to a mall :O) 19:31 - Having visited CompUSA (think PC World) I walked for miles until I found Westshore Mall. A tad hungry by this point, I decide to find food. Having spent the last day or so resigned to the fact that everything here foodwise is covered in lard - a fact seemingly confirmed by lunch at NetP@rk, which was a nice healthy chicken salad (swimming in oil) - I discover something called Evos, which does healthier fast food...Not bad at all!
