Musings on a world I am no longer sure about
Jetlag and sweatyness
7:42 - Considering a palm Tungsten... Tho that would be bad of me :O)
Set the alarm all wrong...Would like to say that that’s because it was confusing and foreign, but no, it’s because I set it to PM not AM. Ach well ;O)
$11.99 for breakfast. Bah. Oh well, at least they’re paying
17:18 - Finished for the day. Wonder if there’s anywhere open to explore tonight...the workshop has been cool so far, feels like we got a lot done...just need to convince them about my style changes and all will be well in the world. Hot and sticky tho...aircon broke in the meeting room. More of the same tomorrow as it’s probably still gonna be broken then as well. Wonder if they’ve heard of fans out here in AirCon city
Netpark (where the office is based) is very huge. Huge huge huge. Big. It’s like a somewhat empty designer airport - you go out the door and there’s a low powerful machine hum and strong lights in the roof giving off a clean white supermarket light. People wander about leisurely but determined to get where they want to go with minimum noise. It kinda has a “library” air about it...so I’m sat here waiting for my lift back to the hotel (figure if I use very little money they might not notice the internet charge
...at home it’d be 10:30 by now, which probably goes some way towards explaining why I am so very tired. Still, I slept OK I guess
Was odd waking up this morning to realise I couldn’t see out the window because of condensation. On the outside of the window! It’s so humid and hot outside that water condenses on the cold, airconditioned window

The Big Day
9:31 - Made it to Gatwick with little effort. Now I’m in the Biggest Queue In The World. It’s snaked out the North terminal door and out by the emergency exit...which is glass roofed and a tad greenhouseish. Was hoping check in would be quick as I am without breakfast. You’d think that they’d at least have wandering hot dog salesmen to feed the Queue. It’s unlike BA to miss an opportunity to make a quick buck...
I turn the corner, an ocean of people before me. This is the doctor’s waiting room from Hell. The Queue twists and turns, confined by black and yellow fabric. I suspect this may be why they told us to put all sharp objects in our cases, downstairs...to prevent someone losing it and taking out an attendant or two.
12:18 - Fortunately, shortly after that they opened up a new set of desks, so I got through quite soon after :o) Now I’m sat in a big comfy seat at 20,000 feet, attempting a system restore to try and get IIS working again so I can build some more FreakCity.
I bought a duty free toy, too... A fold out keyboard for my palm. Sadly I forgot to install Palm Desktop on the laptop so I can’t install the drivers for it. Oh, and I broke lilo so can’t boot into linux either. Dammit!
Still, the chilled champagne is making up for it :O)
Mmmfood. Duck and chutney followed by salmon and mash. Panders to the snob in me, as well as my East End heritage They skimped on the crackers tho...2 water biscuits indeed...
17:02 - Bah. Run out of laptop. If this wasn’t an ickle 777 I’d be able to plug it in.
Managed to doze some too - can’t believe I’ve been on a plane 5 and a bit hours
Watching some dodgy Leo DiCapreo/Tom Hanks movie, didn’t catch the start so no idea what it’s called. Map says we’re somewhere near Bermuda but at 36,000 feet I doubt I’d see anything.
Leo has just been arrested! Bless. Now he’s working for Tom Hanks at the FBI! This plot twists and turns at the same rate Leo pouts and scowls
Might read some for a bit
17:03 - I appear to have bought an ickle keyboard type thing for my palm. Bless
It’s 5 hours since the last entry I made, but I’m on tampa time now. Nice hotel, fast net access at $9.95 a day charged to my room (IE to the company

15:10 - “An empty vessel makes the loudest noise”, nah, it’s usually a christian with a megaphone... ;O)

Apprehensiveness
7:55 - Hey, how’d I get to be early for the train? I was late leaving too! Last day at work before Tampa...I suspect I’ll be torn between Logistics and Operational Accounting again, which is a shame as I’d much rather be prototyping. Ah well, I guess they’re paying me well so I don’t really care. Never been to America before. O suggests I not worry too much as I’ll feel much slimmer over there. Cheeky fucker. I’m just a little concerned about the heat as all the Tampareans over here love the aircon on about 27°C which is way too much heat for me. Wonder if I can wear shorts to work ;O) Trains from E Croydon were all delayed, so managed to get a swanky affair that got me to work on time without the morning “cycle like a bastard” ritual. Might try and get that one more often!

Even Tower Bridge hates me
7:59 - Connex South Central train
Holy fuck! Almost missed the train! One ofthese days I’ll be so knackered from cycling like a madman that I’ll fall asleep and end up in Horsham. I don’t even know where that is!
Freakcity.net has been registered, but for the life of me, I can’t remember where the configuration interface to add my nameservers is. JPC mailed me to ask about photos so when he replies, I shall have to add a PS I think.
Reading “Dune Messiah” at the moment, it’s quite good, but a little different to the miniseries, unsurprisingly. Susan Sarrandon’s character doesn’t even appear to be in it.
I’m beginning to suspect that graffiti2 isn’t that bad at all, but writing on bouncy trains is :O)
Think I’m going to enable PWS on the laptop and see if I can do some freakcity in Merika...
8:22 - Train late. Getting two trains to work sucks. Especially with a bike. Still, not in until 9 today, so not a big issue...
How hard can it be to run a train on a straight line from here to Brighton, anyways?
I figure if I install access and VS I should be able to work on sites in the evenings. I hope they have the internet in America ;O)
Worked some on my personal site last night. Was fun, aside from making stupid CSS mistakes when tired.
More ClearCase training planned for this morning. Give me CVS any day.
I wonder if business class has power sockets for laptops, *GRIN*
Should I take my tripod to Tampa too? They might think it’s a weapon or something
11:25 - Think I’ve sorted the domain now...Let’s see if it propogates. In other news, Thatcher dead. Ok, so it’s the wrong Thatch, but hey :O)
18:30 - Bah. How dare they drive ships through Tower Bridge when I’m trying to get home!

Pretty day
7:37, Thameslink to Brighton.
7:37, Thameslink to Brighton.
Early start again. Gorgeous sunshine outside, but soo tired. Not sure about graffiti2, more is encompassed in each keystroke, but there are subtle differences that irritate me.
Found a good dockbook reader though
More training today! I can hardly control my excitement!
8:18 - Double espresso for 10p rocks
10:15 - I wish someone in this company knew where I fitted in!
14:29 - I have everything I need now for Tampa, even have beer plans. Not getting more cash until I get back now though. Hope I have enough cash for it all.
20:22 - Everyone seems to like the palmything...I think that the fact that it plays airhockey had something to do with it!
Bah. I want a fag.
I am sat in Retro, yawning. That bastard son of satan karaoke man just played bastard cunting Phil Collins. If it wasn’t for the fact he is quite good at doing the karaoke thing I’d do it myself. Gawd I hope Dave hurries up...I need my bed, and I stil have to cycle home. In the dark, at this rate!
20:46 - On train. Gave up on Dave. Mad person addressing some old bloke who has decided to humour him. “what do you do for a job?”, ”I’m a dalek hunter, sir. Do you believe in Jesus?" etc...care in the community has a lot to answer for!
Pretty sunset on the way home. I like London at this time of night

My First Blog
7:15, Thameslink to Brighton.
As of today I have decided to write a journal. I guess there can’t really be a better way to use my horribly long commute than this
on Sunday I bought a second hand Palm V from CEX... It’s fun learning Graffiti, I’m slowly getting faster, tho it still takes me a good few minutes for a sentence. Oh, and I keep getting my ’E’s backwards. Maybe I’m a closet dyslexic...
Anyways, now I’ve started writing this, I suppose I should really write some software to host it.
Ticket inspectors. Suntanned and blond. What’s the point in that then? Especially at 07:30 in the morning...surely all scrounging doleys are asleep, no?
Urgh. I hate 8am starts. I would find myself in a bad mood if it wasn’t for the fact that graffiti takes up too much of my concentration :O)
...oh, and the fact that I’m about to get paid!
As I look out the window I can see Gatwick. 5 days until my first flight from here...to Tampa...that could be fun.
More training today...more Americans all over the office...they really don’t seem to know what goes on here, somewhat bizzarrely, as it’s their company
10:16
Training turned out to be nottraining. Oh well, at least it means I can go home earlier
Fun fortune for the day:
Meader’s Law:
Whatever happens to you, it will previously have happened to everyone you know, only more so
17:25
Wahey! I got paid! Now I’m all smiley again. *AND* the train was on time, too
So I have moneh again...what better way to celebrate than to buy toys! I now have a brand new BigPalm. Shall have to try and get a refund on this ickle thing now.
My graffiti seems better today...guess it’s just practice...
Can’t work out shortcuts though. Hm. @dts should give me the date and time but doesn’t. Or maybe they mean @DTS or something. Who can say!
