I just got a mobile bill for £450! Right. Listen carefully, I shall say this only once... I bought, two weeks ago, a 3G GPRS Datacard thing. Subscribed to the Orange Mobile Office 400 Service Plan on my existing account and hey presto, I figure I have 400mb to fritter away. My billing date is the 19th So I get my bill, and discover I’ve used 133.333333 mb of my allocation, and the rest is chargeable. At £1.49 per mb (or something ridiculous) And that I’ve actually used 659 megabytes, not the 396 the Orange Dashboard Megabyte Counter said I had... I phone up a lovely sounding Irish man at Orange’s billing centre who expresses admiration at the amazing figure for my bill then puts me on hold for a few weeks as he tries to sort this out... He gets back to me and tells me that the data plan is only for 3G coverage, if you drop out of 3G and onto GPRS you’re not covered and therefore are paying per megabyte. IF this is true, I wasn’t told about it and can find no reference to it anywhere...what legs do I have to stand on? I have a 14day money back guarantee. I’m tempted to take the card back, as if this is the case then its not suited for the purpose for which it was sold to me. Pretty fucking pointless if I can only use the free bundle in 3G areas... Although looking at the figure used (133.3333etc) I can’t help but think that maybe they’ve done the 400mb pro rata as well as the charge for it (as they’ve only charged me 15 instead of 45 for the service plan). This was absolutely not made clear to me at all or even mentioned anywhere when I got it. So...er...help? The second problem I have with this is the total data transfer. Orange claim this is 659.12 meg I used the inbuilt metering on Orange’s 3g Dashboard application to measure it very carefully to 396 meg. It has a built in megabyte counter...and I have no idea what the discrepancy is or where it’s come from...surely their software can’t be *that* wrong? Though it did differ wildly from the modem thing on windows... I am so very happy about all this. Very happy. I am going to shout at them in the shop tomorrow. And if all else fails I’m going to try something fun involving a red hot poker...
